Filing Your Homestead Exemption

As a homeowner in Texas, you may apply for a residential homestead exemption on your primary residence if you occupy the property as of January 1st of the year for which you apply. You only need to apply once (i.e. not every year) to receive an ongoing exemption for as long as the residence remains your primary home. The exemption reduces your overall property tax liability by reducing your taxable valuation by $25,000 (this amount may vary depending on taxing jurisdiction), and also caps the amount by which the County can raise your annual appraised taxable value at a maximum of 10% annually.

The deadline for applying for your Homestead Exemption is April 30th of each year. Please follow the following links to apply for the exemption in the county in which you own the property.

Travis County

Williamson County

Hays County

Comal County

Bastrop County

Please let us know if you run into any issues or questions while filing this application. And please don’t hesitate to reach out when your annual property appraisal arrives in early Spring—I’m happy to review it with you and advise you on whether it may be worth your time to appeal the valuation.
